What is net@home?
net@home is a scientific experiment that uses internet-connected computers to run distributed network calculations for very large networks. You can participate by running a free screensaver tool that downloads and analyzes networks. Running the tool as a screensaver allows to use your unutilized computer time. And, because it's a screensaver you'll also see some pretty pictures from the www.visualcomplexity.com projekt.

What's that in aid of?
Have you ever tried to calculate betweenness-centrality for a network with 500,000 nodes? A lot of important network measures need pretty much time for calculation for larger networks. But the good news is: For a lot of these measures it's possible to portion the calculation to different computers. This is the intent of net@home - solving huge network calculations with many computers.

What are the next steps?
This beta version of the tool is the first stage of the development. Please send me your comments. The first outcomes of this experiment will be presented at the Viszards-Session at Sunbelt in San Diego in March 2009. In the future maybe it's possible that everyone can distribute her/his huge network calculation problems around the globe.

How to participate?
If you are using a Windows system follow these steps:
1. Click net@home-install.exe and install
2. Select net@home as your screensaver

If you have any problems when installing net@home screensaver (maybe you don't have the privilege) it's also possible ...

  • to manually copy the screensaver (net@home.scr) to the windows/system32 folder and select net@home as screensaver in your display properties or
  • to download the net@home executable version (net@home.exe) and start net@home manually

If you are using any other operating system:
Sorry, the first version is just for Windows

Attention!
You have to know that net@home can cause some internet traffic. So, if you have very short traffic capacity or you pay your internet connection per traffic don't load this tool.
